Diesel Particle Filter

The diesel particle filter is used to filter out particles of soot and un-burnt hydrocarbons. One of the most common designs is the filter system comprise of tiny channels which are arranged parallel to each other. The ends of the long channels are interchangeably closed. They compel the gases to flow through them. This is allied with fine pores which are incorporated in some filters. The crux of the abovementioned paragraph is that the filter lets gases pass through while solid residue is left behind.

Diesel Particle Filter – Structure

The design of a diesel particle filter includes temperature sensors connected to an ECU (engine control unit). This monitors the conditions of an engine precisely so that the ignition process can be started. Differential pressure sensors are directly installed with the ECU and the particulate filter. These sensors compute the pressure difference between the filter and an engine. This is crucial because it will let the driver know how much back pressure is exerted and as back pressure can damage the engine an early warning can result in the vehicles safety. While no serious cases have been reported resulting from back pressure but still care must be taken if the standard level of pressure in crossed.

Differential pressure sensors are then connected to soot sensors which sense the amount and type of soot which is coming. This smart system allows the vehicle to adjust the amount of catalyst or chemical which has to be added to convert the incoming soot. Furthermore, the assembly is connected to a catalytic chamber which oxidizes the incoming reactants and produces a less harmful gas. Lastly, the particle filter is connected to complete the job.

If exhaust gases are forced to flow through narrow channels, a problem arises which is that these passages can be clogged with dirt and soot. This can exert pressure back at the engine and its efficiency is decreased. The solutions to this problem will be to clean the assembly from time to time. The time required to clean the assembly depends on shape and type of diesel particle filter. Also, the temperature of about six hundred degrees Celsius is required to carry out the burning process. This temperate can be achieved by driving at high speeds, hence, suitable steps need be taken to cater for the device.

A good alternative is to install a catalytic chamber next to the engine. This can lead to higher efficiency of the system and as a result lower fuel consumption. Its counterpart is the Departronic system. This system injects a chemical into the fuel which lowers the burning temperature. Both the catalytic chamber and the Departronic system lower temperatures needed to start the combustion process. This in turn leads to an enhanced engine life.
