DPF Diesel Particulate Filter

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter

A DPF diesel particulate filter extracts particulate matter from the diesel exhaust gasses emitted from burned diesel fuel. The exhaust gases flow through the filtration system in the filter and most of the particulate matter is trapped. This reduces the amount of particulate matter expelled into the air. The filter is later regenerated to oxidize the trapped particulate matter.

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter – Why do you need a DPF?

A DPF diesel particulate filter is one of the methods used to meet the emissions regulations requirements in the state of California. Emissions regulations have been made more stringent for several reasons. California had such poor air quality that going outside was actually hazardous to your health.

California has seen a significant difference in air quality since the 1970’s when the first automotive related regulations were instituted.  Recently released studies showing the negative health effects of inhaling diesel exhaust fumes over time have also contributed. The most common side effects experienced have been breathing issues, headaches, nausea and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose and throat.

Along with stricter regulations the regulatory agencies have also imposed rigorous fines for non-compliance. Fines can be up to thousands per day per vehicle. Let’s say as of January 1st your fleet was to be in 100% compliance and CARB found that on March 1st you were still not compliant on 3 of your fleet vehicles. CARB could assess fines at the rate of $1,000 per day per vehicle. Given these numbers, the fine would be $180,000 ($3,000 x 60 days) with $3,000 accruing every additional day. In addition, you would still be required to retrofit, replace or repower your 3 fleet vehicles.

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter – Global DPF

An Global DPF diesel particulate filter reduces particulate matter by greater than 85% and provides economical diesel emissions reduction without the use of a catalyst. The Global DPF unit is made with a metal mesh filter that allows for quick heating and cooling so it will generally regenerate in 10 minutes or less.  The Global DPF filter generally only requires regeneration every 8 to 12 operating hours under normal working conditions.
